AM Defence & Marine offers superyacht crews remote training during COVID-19

Whilst onboard training has been halted due to the coronavirus outbreak, UK-based AM Defence & Marine has been training superyacht crews remotely in Working at Height. The course, undertaken on Zoom, covers Working at Height theory and the interactive session encourages participants to discuss and ask questions about their specific yacht.

Since commencing the webinars last month, AM Defence & Marine has overseen nine courses and has received overwhelmingly positive feedback from all who have taken part. More courses are due to take place in the future.

The webinars last for 3-4 hours (with breaks) and cover several topics including:

  • What happens if you fall
  • Legislation
  • Hazard analysis and risk assessment
  • Equipment selection
  • Working at height planning
  • Suspension trauma
  • Inspection requirements
  • How to inspect:
    • Harness
    • Lanyards
    • Arresting blocks

The webinars are carried out by AM Defence & Marine's head of training and are relevant to all crew levels. On commencement of the course, crew members receive a certificate of participation.

The chief officer of a 60-metre (197-foot) superyacht stated:

“We often think we have covered all areas to mitigate the risk of working at height. It is courses like this which confirm that continuous training is necessary. One can always find room for improvement. I believe that this course is beneficial for understanding the inherent dangers associated with this task. As a team, we found Mr. Naylor very informative, precise, and attentive to our questions and concerns. Undoubtedly, we will be reviewing our practices, equipment, and indeed the rescue of persons working aloft as a result. There is a severe need for this review on all yachts. We will encourage our team and others to evaluate the practices often to ensure that we, as an industry, are always performing safely and efficiently.”
