Emirates Team New Zealand and Land Rover BAR are facing repairs to both their sailing yachts, after colliding during the final week of practice racing for the America’s Cup.
According to reports from Yachting & Boating Weekly, Emirates Team New Zealand had a promising afternoon, winning races nine and ten, before colliding with Land Rover BAR during the 12th race’s pre-start. Both teams sustained damage to their catamarans, which are now being repaired in preparation for the start of the tournament in nine days’ time.
Peter Burling, the helmsman of Emirates Team New Zealand said, “It was a bit of a shame in the last pre start we had the leeward end of the line pretty locked down, Ben was quite late and just ran straight into the back of us.
He explained the extent of the damage to the NZ team yacht, commenting, “It went straight in under the media pod with his windward bow and right down the inside of the leeward hull, so there is a pretty good dent there. You can definitely see it has punctured right into the cockpit.”
Land Rover BAR tweeted about the incident and that repairs had begun, with the team aiming to get back on the water, ready to start day three of practice racing.
The British team wrote on its Facebook page, “During the final practice race pre-start of the day, Land Rover BAR bore away behind Emirates Team New Zealand and clipped their inner leeward hull, sustaining limited damage to our starboard bow section. The team are now all working hard to be back out on the water as soon as possible.”
