The organisers of the America’s Cup World Series regatta have decided to go ahead with the race despite the quarantine of Italy’s 62 million citizens, and travel bans and warnings concerning the COVID-19 coronavirus.
The race syndicate, Luna Rossa, is scheduled to reach Cagliari, Italy from 23rd – 26th April 2020. The organisation is closely monitoring developments of the COVID-19 virus and what impact it may have on the World Series regatta. However, the organisers have revealed that there is no back-up plan should the Italian leg be cancelled.
In early June, the second part of the regatta will be held in Portsmouth, England, which is sparking concerns amongst team personnel because some equipment is coming from Italy and may be affected due to quarantine periods.
The total virus cases of coronavirus have risen from 10,148 to 12,462 since the 11th March.
Italy’s economy and tourism has taken a hit due to the virus, with the Italian prime minister, Giuseppe Conte, ordering all stores to close nationwide excluding those selling necessities like pharmacies and supermarkets.
