One of the superyacht industries leading providers of IT services and computer equipment - Azuz IT, has researched the lack of business class email for yachts. After a six month development and testing period a solution was implemented on a number of yachts. According to Azuz IT, the results have caused a decrease of internet bandwidth and an increase of productivity.
Satellite and 3G connections are a good way to connect to the internet when at sea, but limit the availability of email and other services that are readily available when on-land. Having several internet connection types including satellite and 3G/4G mobile data is common place amongst the superyacht community. These connections are excellent for accessing and streaming media, websites and webmail services – but issues arise when “business class” email is involved.
A normal (on-land) business has a single internet connection with a “fixed” internet address (normally referred to as an IP address). The fixed internet address allows for routing of email – allowing the business to utilise push email (instant send/receive), shared calendars and many other features. Switching between connection types causes the internet address to change – impacting the routing of emails and ultimately emails will not be sent or received.
POP email is popular amongst the super yacht community, mainly because the service allows for email to be downloaded despite the internet connection type. Push email allows for synchronization of contacts, calendars, email and tasks between multiple devices – whereas POP does not.
Matthew Bingham, managing director of Azuz IT commented, “Due to internet limitations, the popular consensus for yachts is to opt for an inferior POP email service, but thanks to our research we have enabled an on-shore experience on-board.”
