Big projects recently arrive at Solent Refit

One of the UK’s and Europe’s leading shipyards, Solent Refit, has recently seen a number of large projects arrive at their base in Southampton, England.

One of the biggest current projects includes the famous classic 1961 M/Y Lady K II, which is undertaking a major refit to bring it back into pristine condition. Major work is programmed including a specialist engine rebuild and due to the age of the engines, some parts are being made by specialist companies. The interior decor and furniture is also due for an upgrade, with design and structural work being carried out on the hull to comply with current stability requirements.

The 57m (187 ft) schooner, Montigne, built in 2009, requires a fast and cost effective refit following a demanding sixteen month charter to “Johnnie Walker”. An intensive six week work programme is scheduled so that this yacht can depart in good time to be on display at the Fort Lauderdale Boat Show in November 2013. Work includes superstructure painting, deck work and considerable engineering repairs including a new bespoke stainless steel exhaust system for the engines and generators. The yacht will also benefit from substantial interior repairs and refinishing. The yacht will also complete her RINA 5 year survey whilst in the yard.

The yard’s 1500 ton horizontal lift slipway was easily able to cope with Montigne and with the use of the 10 metre extension, it can potentially accommodate vessels over 60 metres (200 feet).

Also, Princess Yachts delivered one of their new 32M yachts to Solent Refit for a full colour make-over prior to her handover to her new owner. The yacht arrived at the yard and was quickly lifted out and positioned into the main refit hall. Princess commissioned Pinmar, one of the respected and longest established specialist yacht painters in the world to prepare and respray the vessel.

Scaffolding was erected to cocoon the new yacht in preparation for a painting “makeover”.  Solent Refit then stripped the vessel of fittings in preparation for the painting process. Post-curing was also undertaken by Solent Refit, requiring the temperature to be held at 40 degrees for over 48 hours. She has now been relaunched in her new colour scheme.

The final recent arrival was the new 28m Sunseeker Merrick, which arrived at Solent Refit directly from Sunseeker in Poole to be completely ‘wrapped’ in vinyl. She was hauled on the horizontal slipway and moved across into the working halls, where work commenced by Vinyl experts: Wild Group, Hamble.

This was the first vessel to have a full colour change using ‘Vinyl wrap”. She was finished in her new livery of carbon fibre and titanium, as per the owner’s specification, in just three weeks.

All refit halls have benefitted from a new £1 million roof and lighting upgrade which has improved all the working areas. The yard has also invested and built a dredger to maintain the deep water throughout the facility.
