Biological experiments at Marina Port de Mallorca resume

Marina Port de Mallorca has received a new generation of students from Santa Magdalena Sofía School. The students come every year to carry out a biological experiment in the marina waters.

The experiment involves the creation of traps that are strategically placed at the port. Their aim is to study the biofouling process through analysis of the different samples periodically extracted in the laboratory. The traps are made using different recycled materials. They then apply antifouling to compare the differences between the treated traps and those that are not.

Professor Jaime Ripoll explained, “Our idea of this project is to make the students participate actively in the experiment and its follow-up, so that by experiencing it in the first person they become richer. This causes more interest and curiosity than if we simply showed them images on slides.”

The Marina Port de Mallorca team organised a talk for the students about marina animals, given by Palma Aquarium Foundation. It focused on the care of turtles and the various measures to take when rescuing them at sea or on the beach. To strengthen their knowledge after the talk, the students participated in a rescue drill. This ensured they understand and respect animals, and the necessary actions at these crucial moments in order for the animal to survive.

Oscar Fernández of Marina Port de Mallorca took the opportunity to introduce the students to Geneseas, the water cleaning robot that the marina launched during the summer which aims to clean the ocean and prevent marine species feeding on plastics.
