A brand new Irish-based business has the world at its feet with its crafted wooden charts which provide a unique insight in to the world beneath the waves.
Chart Datum, founded by Cian Murphy, is the only company in Europe to craft unique wooden charts that feature major ports and harbours from anywhere in the world. Major landmarks and roads are etched into the land and framed in a custom solid walnut frame and can be personalised for a true one of a kind gift.
Coming from a background of marine engineering, Murphy decided that his love of the sea and wood craft was too much to ignore and so fused his two loves to create his dream business.
The charts are individually crafted in Murphy's Castletownbere workshop from Baltic birch, with the ocean floor hand coloured a distinctive blue to create a striking contrast between land and sea. Starting with a bathymetric chart (the underwater equivalent of a topographic map), the contours are cut into sheets of Baltic birch and assembled into layers to create a powerful visual depth.
Cian Murphy, owner of Chart Datum said, "Our first range of charts cover the Irish Coast so make the perfect gift for sea lovers both here in Ireland or those who want to feel closer to home by having a beautifully crafted piece of Ireland. We are now also creating specially ordered commissions for anywhere in the world so our business is really global.
“The charts lift back the surface of the water exposing the often overlooked, awe-inspiring world that lies below. They are a real talking point and can also be personalised to feature a special hideaway, place of engagement or holiday home."
