Club de Mar Mallorca, one of the longest established private marinas of the island of Mallorca, last week welcomed two superyachts, Rising Sun and Sunrays to port, branding them the ‘giants of the sea’.
At 138m LOA, Rising Sun is the sixth largest private superyacht in the world. Owned by movie producer and philanthropist, David Geffen, Rising Sun arrived at the port on Tuesday 18th August, mooring on the pontoons of the Club de Mar Mallorca, where she stayed until Monday 24th August.
Shortly after, she departed for La Ciotat in Southern France where Simon Brooks, field account manager at Yachting Pages Media Group, met her to hand deliver the latest Yachting Pages Delivers pack before her onward journey across the Atlantic, which is scheduled for three weeks time.
Designed by Jon Bannenberg and sold to her new owner in 2001, Rising Sun was commissioned by her ex-owner Larry Ellison, founder of Oracle Corporation. Ellison is rumoured to have ordered her to be built larger than that of his direct competitor, Microsoft’s Paul Allen, superyacht Octopus.
The luxury vessel has 82 internal departments, including a basketball court at her stern, a movie theatre and a gym. The ship is equipped with a generator able to create enough power to supply a population of 50,000 inhabitants.
This was not the first time that this spectacular superyacht had stopped on the island, but on this visit, she shared the first berth at the Majorcan club with 85m superyacht Sunrays, which arrived in port on Saturday 22nd August.
Sunrays is a colossus of steel, with a unique jade green hull built from a design by Bjorn Johansson. Commissioned by the Indian billionaire, Ravi Ruia, the yacht was launched in March 2010 and is characterised by her elegant and modern exterior design and interior full of natural and exotic materials, both designed by Terence Disdale.
M/Y Sunrays can accommodate up to 16 guests across her five decks, which can be accessed via glass elevators. Her notable on-board amenities include a large owner’s suite with panoramic terrace, a spa that can be converted to a cinema and a helipad.
