Club de Regattas de Port Adriano will be collaborating with Ocibar for the Golden Globe Race. The around-the-world race begins on 4th September 2022, and is the longest non-stop regatta with seven months of competition.
Experienced sailor and naval architect Aleix Sellés will be solo sailing non-stop around the world in the regatta, without electronics. At the Golden Globe Race, sailors are not be able to use GPS, mobile phones, autopilot nor any other electronic navigation equipment, only sextants and cartographic maps.
The Golden Globe Race was born in 1968, and together with its celebration in 2018 after 50 years, only six people in the world have managed to complete a circumnavigation in such conditions. The weather information that participants have access to will be limited, coming via only radio fax and VHF. There will be 24 boats from 13 different countries taking part in this regatta.
Entry requirements for the regatta include using a sailing boat designed before 1989, with a maximum length of 11 metres (36 feet), and a minimum design displacement of 6,200kg. The boat chosen by Sellés is a Rustler 36 known as Onsoro the Bodhisattva, and is 11 metres (36 feet) long and 3.35 metres (10 feet) wide.
Participants will use only the energy provided by the wind and waves to sail around the world. The engine on board is classed as a safety feature, but there are penalties for using it. The sailors will be self-sufficient, from navigation, boat repairs, food and even in the event of requiring medical attention. He will not be able to make any stops or receive any third-party assistance.
However, throughout the 30,000 nautical miles (55,560 km) sailed, participants in the regatta will have four drop-off points close to the coast where they will be able to deposit videos, photos and letters, to keep others informed of their experiences along the entire route.
