Company85 Global Challenge goes Carbon Neutral with ECOsuperyacht

ECOsuperyacht is partnering with Company85 Global Challenge to fully offset all carbon emissions arising from the record circumnavigation.

The Challenge is a bid by British ocean adventurer Alan Priddy to design and build the fastest and most efficient wave-piercing powerboat to circumnavigate the globe, breaking not just the existing 60 days 23 hours 49 minutes powerboat record, but the 45 days 13 hours 42 minutes sailing record. The ultimate goal is the fastest ever surface circumnavigation of the world.

“All the way along, we've been at pains to explain that the Company85 Global Challenge powerboat Accomplish More has been designed to be as fuel efficient as possible,” says Alan Priddy. “The primary motive behind that is to get the greatest range that we can on one fill of fuel, and thus cut down on time spent in port. But we're also very mindful that we have a range of technologies brought together for the first time in one boat, and that it's very likely that what we achieve with Accomplish More will influence the way boats are built in the future.”

“While we want to show it's possible to make boats which are less demanding on the earth's resources, we're also very keen to ensure our environmental balance sheet doesn't go into the red. The boat itself is 80% recycled aluminium, and should she ever be scrapped, we calculate over 90% of her will be recyclable. But ultimately we have to look at the process of carbon offsetting - not just contributing money to schemes such as planting sustainable forests, but actually working out very precisely what our carbon emissions will be, and then deciding on appropriate projects to provide the offset.”

ECOsuperyacht’s Richard Franklin says: “We’re delighted to be working with the Challenge team on this exciting world record attempt. Our current expectation is to offset 1,000 tonnes of carbon emissions, based on their estimated fuel burn of 200,000 litres, plus practice runs, logistics and ground crew movements. We’re working with Alan and the team to keep tabs on all these sources, so that we can get an accurate number at the end of the challenge. The offsetting will be provided by high quality carbon credits from a range of suitable projects, and of course we’ll provide a complete audit trail, as we do for all our clients. We’ll also be working with Alan to look at ways of reducing fuel burn and emissions, so the final amount needing to be offset is minimised.”
