Damen Shipyards Group has announced plans to enlarge its shipyard in Gorinchem, the Netherlands. As part of the expansion, the Netherlands-based company is investing in additional repair facilities and a 150-tonne shiplift, with preparations due to begin towards the end of the year.
Jos van Woerkum, managing director of Damen Shipyards Hardinxveld, commented, “We are seeing how, in the future, more work will be done for Dutch customers in the Netherlands. There is no room for further growth at our yard in Hardinxveld-Giessendam and so we are turning to Gorinchem.”
The Dutch company’s headquarters are situated at the same site in Avelingen-West in Gorinchem, with the shipyard planning to divest the Hardinxveld-Giessendam yard upon completion of the expansion.
However, they will maintain a presence at Hardinxveld-Giessendam with Damen Marine Components, which employs around ninety people. The Hardinxveld shipyard currently houses a 40-tonne shiplift, but the completion of the new facilities in late 2023 will include a 150-tonne shiplift.
Van Woerkum continued, “As a result, we can respond to rising demand from local companies in the region, who have been customers in our home town of Hardinxveld from the very beginning.”
Upon completion in late 2023, the entire Hardinxveld-Giessendam workforce will move to the new yard to Gorinchem. The yard will be an optimal location for the design, maintenance, repair, conversion, and new building of ships up to 90 metres (295 feet) in length.
