Doyle Sails launches Project Sail to Shelter

International sailmaker Doyle Sails has announced its partnership with Sail to Shelter. Headed by Angela Abshier, the not-for-profit organisation upcycles retired sails by converting them into shade and shelter for humanitarian aid organisations to support crises around the world.

After reaching out to the global sailing community with an urgent call for used sails, over 50 sails have been donated to Doyle from all over the world. These donated sails have either already been repurposed into essential shade and shelter and are either on the ground at the US/Mexico border or in transit to Poland, or on their way to the Sail to Shelter head office in Sacramento, USA. Not only are the sails being kept out of landfill, but they also fill an urgent requirement for humanitarian aid organisations.

Most elite racing sails have a short life, with some not sailing more than a dozen times. With custom designs specific to each yacht, in the world of sailing yacht racing, equipment much be in perfect condition every time, meaning there isn’t a secondary market. Doyle’s partnership with Sails to Shelter aims to find an economical and sustainable solution for the millions of square metres of high-performance sails that would otherwise go to waste.
