Eco Angels take action to reduce plastic waste after Monaco Yacht Show 2018

STARS‘N’BARS, in partnership with Yachting Pages Media Group, joined forces to pick up plastic waste during and after the Monaco Yacht Show 2018.

Volunteers were invited to join the Eco Angels to pick up leftover plastic waste from the show and to encourage others to get involved and raise awareness of environmental responsibility.

The Eco Angels also shared educational tools and resources from the Prince Albert II Foundation initiative ‘Beyond Plastic Med’ to distribute best practices and help reduce the environmental impact of the yachting industry.

Eco Angels is a movement created by Kate Powers, co-founder of family restaurant and sports bar STARS’N’BARS in Monaco. A dedicated environmentalist, over the years Powers has formed teams of volunteers after major events at Port Hercule to help the local waste authority pick up plastic waste to avoid it spreading to the port.

The Eco Angels stood out from the crowd at Monaco Yacht Show thanks to their bright pink t-shirts provided by Yachting Pages. Using special eco-friendly rubbish bags, generously provided by Société d’Exploitation des Ports, the Eco Angels collected approximately 100 bags of plastic waste as well as distributing more than 500 reusable rubbish bags to exhibitors over the shows four days.

Powers commented on the response the Eco Angels received during the show, “The response was overwhelmingly positive. Many exhibitors even shared information on their own companies’ waste reduction initiatives.”

Monaco Yacht Show (MYS) is one of the world’s leading superyacht events. Over 36,000 industry players and influencers attend each year for business, networking and pleasure.

Annette Anderson, STARS‘N’BARS’ marketing manager, commented on the use of plastic at such large events, “We wanted to be visible to visitors and exhibitors and remind them that by 2050 our oceans will contain more plastic than fish – we need to change our way of thinking!”

She added, “By being visible about the sustainability around MYS and really shouting about it, we can encourage others to consider going green too.”

Simon Brooks, field operations manager of Yachting Pages Media Group, said, “We are very proud to not only be taking proactive steps to cleaning up our oceans, but also to be working in such close collaboration with Annette and Kate from STARS‘N’BARS.

He continued, “Over the coming months we will see some significant industry influencers joining our mission, and soon, let’s hope that we can actually start to see the benefits of our actions – less pollution in our oceans. Step by step we will make a difference.”
