The captain and owner of M/Y Awatea are joining forces with superyacht companies to organise an educational environmental event in Barcelona. Evolution Yachts, MB92, Y.CO, OneOcean Port Vell and The YachtCrew Environmental Society will join ocean advocate Emily Penn in hosting superyacht crew for the day.
The event includes a beach clean-up and a ‘waste art’ creation session to encourage the industry to take responsibility for its ecological impact.
Hatty Campbell, business development manager for Y.CO, says the core reason the campaign began in 2017 was to inspire people within the industry to combat the rise of pollution in the world’s oceans.
“By educating yacht owners and their crew, we hope to help spread the word to those who are in a position to have real influence to make changes on a global scale. The outcome of the event will raise awareness regarding the danger of single-use plastic,” Campbell commented. “We hope to change the mind-set of yacht crew – and the industry as a whole – and inspire them to educate those around them.”
Marina Peyrard, customer care manager at MB92, sees the event as a platform to highlight the fact that everyone can help on a local level. She noted, “For all of us within the industry as well as the communities in which we live and work, the ocean is our passion. We have a responsibility for ensuring that the next generations have the opportunity to enjoy the ocean as we do. Locally, the community in Barcelona have undertaken initiatives by working more closely together to implement change. However, further afield, the broader superyacht industry needs to be a vanguard for reform.”
The agenda for the day includes a workshop, fronted by Penn, to teach crews about small ways they can change their consumption of plastics, and a prize-giving ceremony for the best work of art created from the rubbish that was collected during the beach clean-up.
The event will take place in Barcelona on 3rd April and is open to all crew currently based in the area.
