Fire at Croatian marina destroys yachts

A fire that broke out over the weekend at Marina Kaštela, on Croatia’s Adriatic coast, has destroyed five yachts of around 20 metres (66 feet) and damaged a further 18 craft.

Firefighters managed to bring the situation under control by around 21:40 local time on Saturday 29th May. There were no casualties.

Marina Kaštela has 420 berths and is owned by local businessman Joško Berket, a former Mayor of the Kaštela municipality. Berket claims the fire was most likely caused by one of the seafarers.

“I can confirm that five yachts burned and that the material damage was extremely big. The fire broke out on one of the yachts that was destroyed by the fire, and the cause, although not yet confirmed, is definitely human,” Berket told local daily Slobodna Dalmacija.

“The vessels that went up in flames were pulled out and towed from Marina Kaštela to the Kaštela Bay.”

Kaštela has a population of around 39,000 inhabitants and is located in the Split-Dalmatia county of southern Croatia.
