Fire destroyed 35m Moon due to ‘electrical fault’

A fire which engulfed and sank the 35m superyacht Moon last week has been blamed on an ‘electrical fault’, according to the yacht’s owner.

Yachting Pages recently reported on a fire on board 35m M/Y Moon in Al Hamra Marina located in Ras Al Khaimah, about 90km from Dubai. According to 7Days, the vessel was completely destroyed and sank after attempts to extinguish the blaze, which originated on the upper deck, failed.

Beginning whilst berthed in the marina, RAK Civil Defence crews tried to bring the flames under control, before a tug boat towed the vessel out of the marina to prevent the fire spreading.

The blaze then made its way completely through the vessel, before it sank. The yacht was insured, the crew of the yacht are safe and no injuries were reported.

Built in 2000 by Turkish-based Eser Yat, Moon had a wooden hull and superstructure. With a beam of 7.5-meters, she had a shallow draft of 1.87m and could reach a maximum speed of 24 knots.
