Hinckley announces world’s first fully electric yacht

Hinckley Yachts has unveiled its latest design, Dasher – the world’s first fully electric luxury boat.

In an historic announcement made at the 47th Newport International Boat Show last week, the boat-maker introduced the 8.6m vessel, which is named after the company’s original Picnic Boat hull and due to hit the water in the near future.

Hinckley, which has been working on the project for more than two years, is taking orders on its circa £379,000 creation for delivery in summer 2018.

Dasher will be propelled by twin 60kW electric motors, from German company Torqeedo, and two BMW i3 lithium ion batteries. It is understood that the combination will produce a range of 40 miles at a cruising speed of 10mph. At around 2,900kg, it is the lightest boat Hinckley has ever built, with the use of a carbon-epoxy hull and carbon fibre stringers lending itself to a significant amount of weight saving.

It is thought that when connected to a pair of standard 50-amp lines, Dasher can fully charge in around four hours.
