ICON Yachts has begun the conversion of Project UFO, turning a commercial vessel into a long-range luxury family explorer for extended voyages with the possibility for charter operation.
Project UFO started in 2021 at Monaco Yacht Show where, during a brainstorming session between ICON Yachts and the client, the option of a conversion was discussed.
Inspired by the Espen Oeino-designed Project MASTER, which ICON Yachts unveiled at the 2021 Monaco Yacht Show, it was quickly concluded that a conversion was ideally suited to the client and his family's vision – an explorer, fully equipped with tenders, features and amenities for sailing around the world.
ICON Yachts was commissioned to perform a global scan of the commercial shipping fleets to search and identify a suitable platform vessel that would suit the client’s preferences and requirements.
A 66-metre (216-foot) offshore rescue and support vessel was chosen and, after extensive research, ICON Yachts confirmed it to be the favourite platform for the conversion project.
The focus of the conversion is to increase the volume of the luxury accommodation areas for the owner and guests by adding a superstructure and modifying existing interior spaces, resulting in generous exterior decks and also allowing for substantial space for tenders, toys and a submarine.
In addition, two fully-certified helicopter landing pads will be accompanied by a heli hangar. Guest access to the water will be provided by lengthening the vessel to 70m (229ft) and creating a beach club.
The conversion will boast spacious VIP and guest suites, a private owner’s suite, large saloons and recreation areas, while new classification will provide the possibility to navigate in Polar regions.
The overall design is close to being finalised and a full team are working closely on the project while the platform is safely berthed alongside the quay at the ICON yard.
