Interior designers see rise in contemporary looks on board superyachts

According to experts there has been a clear move in the new build and refit sectors from the high gloss ‘bling’ finishes we have grown accustom to, to a more subtle contemporary matt finish. Matt Shelton from Cove Interiors, a superyacht interior finishing company, confirmed that the yachting sector has seen a rise in natural washed effects and more exotic timbers.

With technical advancements and new stylistic trends, it is no surprise that yacht interior designs are changing. When taking to Yachting Pages, Christian Leyk from Ken Freivokh Design commented, “Indeed I would have thought that the high gloss mania ended somewhere in the eighties, and nowadays only remains on the very traditional vessels in the shape of super varnished woods. Other than that, a good contemporary interior would definitely consist of a good mix of surface finishes, the majority being either satin or matt; this is why high gloss accents can be used much more effectively.”

Christian went on to say, “I’m not sure if it is wishful thinking, or indeed a trend, but I have the feeling that I’m seeing bolder interiors lately. On the other hand, there is a lot of playing it safe still going on within the superyacht industry. Nothing wrong about that really, because frankly, it’s easier to spend time in a relaxed and understood environment, rather than in a place that shouts “hey, how cool is that!” all the time.”

As ever, the superyacht industry is sure to continue to shift and change design over the up and coming years. Perhaps the shiny high gloss finishes will return, or the luxury white exterior may become more controversial.
