Is it possible to build a luxury yacht in 20 days?

I’m sure most of you are already laughing at this statement, but one model maker Marco Matulli from Modellismo in Scala proved just that after he was set the seemingly impossible task of creating a scale model of the high performance boat ‘Fjord 48 Open’ in time for Boot, Dusseldorf.

The Christmas period is always busy, but Marco Matulli, owner of Modellismo in Scala was busier than ever after receiving a call from Pierre Duchein, the head of sales for Southern Europe of Hanse Yachts AG.

Initially quoted a time frame of 2-3 months, Hanse Yachts AG was running out of options. Modellismo in Scala wanted to help their client so agreed to get the model done in such a short space of time by using their new milling machine.

Marco Matulli said, “I accepted the challenge and started studying the plans as soon as possible. I started to build the model using the 3D file and new milling machine. To make the hull of the model I used MDF, the seats were in plywood and the cloth, a soft touch fabric.”

After around 10 days of hard work, including Boxing Day and New Year’s Day and mounting up to 100 hours of work, Marco happily sent the first image to Pierre.

Following a much more relaxed conversation with Pierre, now that he had seen how well the model was coming along, Marco could then proceed in painting the yacht jet black and snow white, as well as finishing the incredible finer details.

Marco hit his deadline and The Fjord 48 open was sent onto Dusseldorf with one day to spare before the boat show opened.

Marco Matulli said, “Building this model was a challenge for me, however, this is more than a job because I make all the models to the best standard with as many finer details as possible.”

A great ending to a rather rushed festive holiday, but what a beauty she is.
