A statement from several key inter-governmental organisations, including IMO, WHO and ILO, has been released calling on governments to prioritise seafarers (and aircrew) in their national COVID-19 vaccination programmes.
The statement follows the communication of several seafarer professional organisations with authorities at local, national and international levels requesting that seafarers are placed on lists of essential workers to be vaccinated against COVID-19 in order to continue their work. Seafarers are key workers in the maritime industry, which accounts for 90% of world trade. There are also public requests to that effect made to the United Nations, the European Parliament and the European Commission.
