Kymeta announces new satellite system for superyachts

The US satellite technology company Kymeta has announced the launch of its newest system, mTenna, said to eliminate the need for satellite domes on board superyachts.

Announced earlier this month at the Satellite 2017 conference in Washington DC, the new system will reduce the need for maintenance, as a fully electronically steered system.

Håkan Olsson said to Boat International, “What we have heard from captains and crews is that there are a number of pain points with today’s design and all the moving parts. They break down more often in hot climates, particularly in the Arab regions, which are prone to dust storms.

“The superyacht market is ideal for us to pursue. The volumes are very low, but the value proposition is extremely attractive in terms of engaging with early adopters – it is an industry that likes to be first.”

The company’s first combiner system was revealed at the 2016 Monaco Yacht Show, and this new system is reported to be ready for integration in both new-build and refit projects. Boat International also reported that the new system had generated interest from “every major shipyard in Europe”, according to Olsson.

The first units are expected to be tested and sent out on sea trials in Europe over the next three months.
