Laurent Giles unveils 110m High Efficiency Motor Yacht

Laurent Giles has unveiled a concept for a new 110m superyacht. The new High Efficiency Motor Yacht, (HEMY), has been designed using a new approach for the British naval architect, which has focussed heavily on technological and architectural values rather than aesthetics alone.

Managing Director David Lewis said, “Now, the conceptual design we’re focusing on has a story behind it. Conceptual design here is more about the idea behind it, rather than just what it looks like.”

The constant stream of new concepts in the superyacht market creates a vast array of innovative design ideas, although the technology behind them tends to be conceived at a later stage, according to Laurent Giles. On this project, the studio has therefore decided to start with the technological perspective, with form following function.

Lewis explained, “The concept was to start with a typical 70 to 75-metre yacht and lengthen the hull to offer increased interior volume and remain within a 3,000-gross tonnage limit. Not only does the HEMY offer increased accommodation volume, but with its more efficient length-to-beam ratio and lighter displacement-to-length, it offers significant improvements in performance and sea keeping.

“The HEMY concept with the same power as a typical 75m achieves speed improvements of two to three knots, or in other words, achieves the same cruising or top speed for about 65 per cent of the power, with corresponding savings in fuel consumption.”

While the design remains aesthetically simplistic, the platform is devised with stylistic customisation in mind.
