Less than 50 days until start of 35th America’s Cup

There are now less than 50 days to go until the start of the 35th America’s Cup in Bermuda.

According to a press release from the America’s Cup team, experts are predicting this year to be the “greatest America’s Cup in the 166 year history of the competition for the oldest trophy international sport.”

The America’s Cup Class (ACC) boats in this year’s competition are described by organisers as the “fastest and most manoeuvrable in the history of the America’s Cup.” The yachts are hydro foiling carbon-fibre catamarans, able to quite literally fly above the surface of the water at over 90kph (50 knots).

According to organisers the boats are able to complete an entire race (approximately 20 minutes) without the hulls touching the water, and sailing upwind above the waves. While this is a sight to behold, this puts pressure on the crews, as even the slightest mistake can be the difference between winning and losing.

Located in the historic Royal Naval Dockyard in Bermuda, the America’s Cup Village will host a variety of experiences for spectators. Alongside the America’s Cup will be the Superyacht Program, run in conjunction with BWA Yachting. With 50 superyachts already part of the program and over 30 more expected to make their way to Bermuda, this is said to be “one of the largest collections of superyachts and megayachts, anywhere in the world, ever.”

A number of the vessels will also race in the America’s Cup Superyacht Regatta, organised by Boat International. The Red Bull Youth America’s Cup will also take place, seeing 12 young sailors racing AC45 foiling catamarans.
