Mactac, a world leader in high-performance adhesive marine films, has announced the launch of the first silicone-based antifouling film coating without harmful biocides.
‘MacGlide’ is a biocide-free self-adhesive coating that protects the yacht hulls from the colonisation of marine microorganisms, without spreading toxic substances into the ocean.
The new product was recently launched at the Nautic Paris Boat Show at Porte de Versailles Exhibition Centre between the 3rd and 11th December 2016, where an application demonstration was given.
Developed in collaboration with PPG, a world-leading paint manufacturer, MacGlide has been described as an ‘underwater painted adhesive film’, and branded as a ‘real technological advance’ by Mactac.
In a recent statement, Mactac explained, “As an anti-adherent, silicone prevents the colonisation of the hull without spreading biocides and/or pesticides which contaminate the water. The preservation of marine life, and indirectly human health, naturally figure in the front row of its benefits, which has motivated its use on merchant and naval ships.
“This revolutionary solution overcomes the inconveniences while only keeping the advantages: The silicone covering is coated onto the self-adhesive film by means of an industrial process, with control of the thickness profile and without emitting volatile organic compounds (VOCs) into the atmosphere.
“Developed by Mactac after five years of research and development, this adhesive complex is particularly robust and seawater-tight.”
The MacGlide coating system is completed with a sealing varnish, to be applied n transverse or longitudinal stripes, depending on the shape of the hull. This can also be used to make localised repairs.
