Marine Photographers 'Called Up' for 2012 Photography Competition

Budding photographers have an opportunity to go down to the water, shoot some winning maritime images and be in with a chance of winning a £1,000 competition prize in National Historic Ships UK (NHS-UK)’s 2012 Photography Competition.

The competition is run in association with Classic Boat and winning entries will be published in the magazine. All short-listed entrants will be invited to the prestigious National Awards Ceremony onboard HMS Belfast in October 2012.

“We are delighted to be launching our annual photography competition in a year that will see our maritime heritage on display to the world”, said Martyn Heighton, Director of National Historic Ships UK.

“The Thames Diamond Jubilee Pageant, which will bring together some thousand craft, will offer the perfect backdrop for all budding photographers looking for some maritime inspiration.”

The £1,000 prize can be spent by the winner on a registered historic vessel of their choice. The competition has a range of categories for all ages, and NHS-UK is urging nationwide schools to get involved in its search for the Young Photographer of the Year.

The winner will receive camera equipment for their school, and a class visit to a historic vessel near them. The winning young snapper will also have their award-winning shot published.

According a statement released by NHS-UK, the firm is “looking for entries that truly capture the spirit of the UK’s maritime heritage… With the Thames Diamond Jubilee Pageant just weeks away there couldn’t be a better time for the nation to get snapping.”

The winner of the 2012 Photography Competition will be judged by an expert panel that includes: Jock Wishart, one of the UK’s leading maritime and polar adventurers; author Philip Hoar; and Geoff Holt, the Yachting Journalists Association Pantaenius Yachtsman of the Year.

Last year’s winner was Mike Garlick from Salisbury, UK, who wowed the judges with his photo entitled ‘Maybird. Early morning Newton Creek’.

Interested photographers can enter their maritime inspired photos online at www.nationalhistoricships.org.uk and can submit up to two photographs per category. All entries must be received by midnight on 31st August 2012.

National Historic Ships UK is an independent government-funded organisation offering advice to UK local authorities, funding bodies and the historic ships sector on all matters relating to historic vessels in the UK.
