McMullen & Wing launches 50m explorer superyacht

Auckland shipyard, McMullen & Wing has launched a 50m custom-built superyacht from its facility in Mount Wellington today. Weighing in at 550 tonnes, she is the largest yacht from the yard to date.

The explorer superyacht, Y/N 1016, has been designed by McMullen & Wing in cooperation with Gregory C Marshall and continues the rugged and masculine appearance of the first yacht in the Diamond Series, the 45m Big Fish, which has spent large amounts of time exploring the Arctic Circle since her launch in 2010.

She has an ice blue hull and bright yellow bootstrap at her waterline, making her immediately recognisable. As an explorer yacht, she is equipped to withstand long periods at sea with extensive storage space created aboard, and for covering long distances with her range of 6,000nm.

Launched onto the Tamaki River in Auckland today, she is expected to remain at the Auckland Viaduct until Saturday before undergoing outfitting and extensive sea trials at the McMullen facility.

According to reports from the New Zealand Herald, Michael Eaglen, chief executive of McMullen & Wing confirmed that the owner wishes to remain anonymous both by name and nationality. The vessel’s name is also to remain a closely guarded secret, currently known only by her yard number, 1016.

Mr Eaglen confirmed that the yacht would set sail from the McMullen & Wing facility in April. He said, “She’s handing over in March. These are complicated boats, there are a lot of systems to run up and test and prove. Once that’s all done, she’ll head off on a big world cruise.”

Y/N 1016 accommodates up to 12 guests in luxury suites and houses 12 crew in en-suite cabins. She has natural gardens on the bridge deck, as well as large hot tubs on both the sun deck and foredeck. The owner’s suite will also have its own private garden deck.

She can travel at speeds of 15 knots, powered by two 1,000hp diesel engines.
