Nautor's Swan founder reveals new sailing yacht concept OceanBel 128

The founder of Nautor’s Swan and creator of the renowned Mirabella sailing yachts has unveiled a new 39-metre (128-foot) sailing yacht concept named OceanBel 128.

The concept was curated by uncle and nephew, Finnish entrepreneurs Pekka Koskenkylä and Sami Lehtonen, describing it as “high-performance sailing boat with the volume and comfort of a large motor yacht.”

The yacht boasts ultra-green credentials, to be built from 100% recycled materials. Regular diesel engines have been substituted for two 250 HP (186 kW) hybrid electric motors for propulsion. The concept also has the possibility to include large solar panels that can provide up to 30kW charging power in good sunlight, described as a “solar assisted plug-in hybrid electric vessel.”

A simplified sail plan, consisting of two foresails, has been utilised to allow operation with minimal crew, maximising its appeal.

Lehtonen explained, “Our take was that many of the motor yacht owners see sailing yachts much too complicated to operate and that the sailing boat interior layouts were not to their liking.

“Our design brief was therefore to create something that the motor yacht clientele would consider easier to approach and operate.”

A newly designed deep lifting keel board provides the yacht with a minimum draft of 2 metres (7 feet) and a maximum draft of 7 metres (23 feet), allowing the yacht to enter shallow harbours and anchorages while helping reduce rolling while underway.

Large cold storage and freshwater capacity allow the yacht to continue for weeks without the need for provisions.

The interior has been designed specifically to appeal to motor yacht owners. “This is why the dining area is elevated and put at the stern so that people can see outside while dining and not feel cramped in the ‘cargo hold’,” Lehtonen said.

The sleeping quarters include six large en suite double cabins and a smaller cabin forward, with crew accommodation for up to five staff. All cabins are insulated with thick bulkheads for extra privacy and noise cancellation, with the engine room located at the stern of the yacht.
