Yachting Pages has put several of the leading safety cases (and other associated products) to the test. The objective: to ascertain how each product performs and determine which one is best equipped to safely contain a lithium battery-induced fire.
Since launch during the latter part of 2013, the innovative new system from AkzoNobel’s Awlgrip business, Awlwood MA is fast becoming the choice for protecting exterior wood above the waterline.
Awlwood MA has already been used during a number of new build and refit projects in Europe, North America and Australia, including the 90ft Humphreys Yacht designed Tempus 90 Tempus Fugit and the recently restored classic powerboat Trinidad.
Designed specifically to work in perfect synchronicity with any wood, Awlwood MA is formulated to form a strong yet flexible link with the wood structure to protect whilst allowing the beauty of the natural coating and grain to shine through.
In addition to protecting against water and stopping oils and resins from leaching out of the wood, Awlwood MA also shields against sunlight, negating the need for re-application every single year. It retains the same gloss, DOI (distinctness of image) and natural appearance as first application for multiple seasons.
Formulated for professional application only, Awlwood is a single pack, two product system comprising of a primer (clear, yellow, or red) and clear finish (satin or gloss). The complete Awlwood MA system is achieved with no sanding required in-between coats. It can also be applied over a wide temperature and humidity range (even down to 4°C).
