New superyacht marina to open in Krabi next year

Port Takola Yacht Marina and Boatyard in Krabi, Thailand, has announced that it will complete construction of its new superyacht berths by May next year, completing the first phase of an ambitious plan to transform the 110-acre site into a superyacht destination.

Designed in conjunction with the world-renowned marina consultant Simon Arrol, former managing director of Camper & Nicholsons Marinas, the build will see the creation of 48 yacht berths that will be able to accommodate yachts up to 40m LOA. Construction at the site, which is being developed by retired surgeon admiral of the Royal Thai Navy, Dr Suriya na Nagara and Matthew na Nagara, will resume at the site after the rainy season in November.

Accessed by a dredged approach channel, once complete, the new marina development will include luxury residences, a resort hotel, nature trails and a museum. Located 40 minutes’ drive from Krabi International Airport, and set within the natural beauty of Phang Nga Bay, Admiral Suriya is hoping that it will soon attract many yachts to the area.

He said, “After careful study, we decided to develop a marina to take advantage of the many positive factors of the site, including its perfect shelter and excellent geographical location.”

Development partner, Matthew na Nagara, explained that the plan was to create a “boutique marina that sits comfortably within the surrounding landscape.”

He said, “The first phase of Port Takola is only modest in terms of scale and facilities, but it will be sufficient to provide a great experience to yacht owners and their guests. We want to combine the legendary Thai hospitality with the management standards expected by sophisticated international yachtsmen.”

The development comes in time with the announcement of Thailand’s Prime Minister who wishes to develop the country as a superyacht hub. Earlier this year, the country therefore granted its first foreign-flagged superyacht charter license, which is expected to draw more yachts to the region this winter. Furthermore, Royal Phuket Marina has also announced that it will invest £95 million in its infrastructure over the next five years.
