Organisers of the Newport Charter Yacht Show have announced that preparations for the 33rd edition are well underway, with new ownership and a new venue giving the 2016 show a ‘fresh spin’ on some of the historic show’s long-held traditions.
Taking place between Tuesday 21st and Friday 24th June, the 2016 Newport Charter Yacht Show will get underway at the Newport Shipyard, with the show’s new owners working closely with the previous owners for a smooth transaction.
Renewed traditions will include chef competitions, tablescape contests and industry-focused seminars, including expanded opportunities for sponsors and vendors. The main aim of the show will however remain. Organisers said, “First and foremost, Newport Charter Yacht Show is about providing an exceptional experience for agents, brokers and other industry professionals in the business of match making: Matching clients who are wishing to charter in New England with their best options for doing so.”
Jeff Shaffer, director of charter marketing for Neptune Group Yachting, a Fort Lauderdale charter business and show veteran said, “I always think of Newport Charter Yacht Show as the official kick off to New England’s summer charter season. This show has been very successful for me because the charter brokers in New England area typically don’t come to Florida where most of my yachts are based, so they don’t know the yachts the crews personally. This show gives them the advantage of one-on-one time with them.”
Neptune Group Yachting will showcase three charter yachts this year, including 37.8m M/Y Loose Ends, 33.5m M/Y Kaleen and 21.3m M/Y Grand Cru.
Jeff continued, “Booking in New England is different than in Florida and the Caribbean, as its much more last minute. The yachts need to be ready at a moment’s notice; it’s not uncommon for me to receive an email or phone call and start a charter on Friday.”
The largest motor yacht signed up to date in the 49m Trinity Yachts M/Y Zoom Zoom Zoom, represented by Northrop & Johnson. Her captain, Captain Mike Finnegan said, “Our charter style is a little more like than of an expedition. We like going off the beaten path, setting and hauling lobster traps and giving our guests an ‘ocean to table’ experience. New England is always great for this, not only because of its aesthetics and climate, but also for its coastline and history.”
The largest sailing yacht at the show to date will be the 33m S/Y Marae, represented by Nicholson Yacht, who is a regular attendee at the show and won Best Sailing Yacht at the International Superyacht Design Awards in 2004.
Also at the show will be two Oyster sloops, 20m S/Y Hurrah and 19m S/Y Bandido. Oyster’s Molly Marston said, “It’s a great event and very important in the charter industry. I’m glad to see that great care has been taken in finding Newport Charter Yacht Show a new owner and a new home.”
With accommodation for yachts up to 91.4m, Newport Shipyard is a full-service marina and shipyard, experienced in hosting many prestigious yachting events, including the biennial Newport to Bermuda Race Crew Party and the Candy Store Cup (formerly the Newport Bucket) in July.
