NiDAR and Sentinel provide marine security for London 2012 sailing events

Sonardyne International Ltd. has now revealed that its integrated maritime security technologies were deployed to help protect the Weymouth and Portland Sailing Academy Marina during the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympics Games.

Supplied to the Dorset Police Olympic and Paralympics Security Planning Team, the NiDAR and Sentinel systems were installed in Portland Harbour to create a 360° security shield that continuously monitored the area for any unauthorised access from on or below the water.

Recognised as the best performing intruder detection sonar on the market, Sentinel has been deployed worldwide to protect strategically important waterside facilities, ports, vessels and military assets. The system reliably detects, tracks and classifies underwater targets approaching a protected asset, providing security personnel with advanced threat warnings.

NiDAR was integrated into Dorset Police’s local Command and Control centre where it merged Sentinel sonar data with thermo-optical imagery to create a complete situational awareness picture of the harbour.

Chief inspector David Dent said, “We were very pleased with the successful deployment and performance of NiDAR and Sentinel during the Games.  It goes without saying that security during the Olympics and Paralympics was of paramount importance and with the technology supplied by Sonardyne, we were able to secure the 35 square miles of water used for the 2012 sailing events.”

Commenting on the project, Ross Gooding, business development manager for Maritime Security at Sonardyne said, “Sentinel and NiDAR have redefined expectations of surface and underwater surveillance.  With deployments worldwide, these security systems continue to demonstrate their ability to perform across a range of challenging environments.  We’re proud to have contributed to the successful and secure running of the sailing with Dorset Police’s Olympic Security Planning Team.”
