NOBISKRUG celebrates the keel laying of an 80-meter superyacht

Nobiskrug celebrated the keel laying of its 80m M/Y that is yet to be named. The ceremonial laying took place at the shipyard’s premises in Kiel, Germany.

Guests gathered along with the yard’s team to hear a short address from the management. Afterwards, an 80t block section was lifted by the shipyards trademark gantry crane into a building shed as part of an important milestone of the construction.

Traditionally, the owner of the yacht brings a special coin that is placed under the keel. Once the yacht is near completion, the coin is retrieved and presented back to the owner as a symbol of luck for their future voyages.

After the keel was laid, the owner and guests were invited for lunch in the SkyLounge situated on top of the 900t gantry crane, 100m up with 360° views of Kiel-Fjord.

Each section will be built under climate-controlled conditions in the yard’s shed, a distinctive construction process used only by Nobiskrug. This process is made possible by a 900t gantry crane that services the sheds and gravity docks on the Kiel site, with the longest dock measuring 426m. The project also benefits from Nobiskrug’s recent investment in a state-of-the-art plasma cutting machine that cost approximately one million euros.

Managing director Holger Kahl said “This happy occasion indicates the start of the hull assembly of the superyacht – when for the first time she is considered to have a soul. It is also a traditional maritime ceremony to bring good fortune to a vessel during her construction and to her captain, guests and crew during her life.”

The M/Y design features a unique use of glass in both the exterior and interior styling.

“Nobiskrug is known for pushing the boundaries and for not being a mass builder; every superyacht we build represents a unique vision of the owner – this project is just another example we are very proud of” commented Holger Kahl.

The superyacht is set to be delivered in 2019 and is part of Nobiskrug‘s ‘SUPERYACHTS FOR THE 22nd CENTURY’ fleet.
