Pendennis restoration of M/Y Malahne wins World Superyacht Award

Pendennis shipyard has announced that its recent restoration of 1937 Camper & Nicholsons yacht Malahne, has won the award for ‘best rebuild’ project at the World Superyacht Awards.

Completed in June 2015 after undergoing a 30-month refit programme, the project was overseen by Nicholas Edmiston, who saw the potential of Malahne and managed the project. Edminston commented, “I was lucky enough to find an owner with the imagination and courage to undertake a massive restoration project- the end result has been fantastic.”

According to a statement from Pendennis, Malahne arrived in Falmouth in September 2012 in a state that did not reflect the glamour she had enjoyed in her heyday, entertaining Hollywood stars including “Grace Kelly and Elizabeth Taylor.” The owner’s brief, Edminston said, was to “recreate the vessel as she was in the 1930s, as if she had always been that way.”

Her exterior design was completed by G.L Watson, who outlined the proportions and integrity of her original design. Pendennis then began an “extensive programme of reconstructing the hull and superstructure to Malahne’s original form, using riveting and steelwork techniques reflective of the original build era.”

Malahne’s interior was completed by Oliver Laws Design, who created an Art Deco interior with attention to detail across everything from hardware to lighting, original furniture and built-in cabinets, and even the vessel’s original Bakelite telephones.

Guy Oliver of Oliver Laws, recruited artisans and hand-painting artists, in order to recreate the authenticity reflective of the 1930’s era. Pendennis then employed traditional boat building and finishing skills to ensure consistent attention to detail, using hand-painting techniques rather than airbrushing.

Mike Carr, managing director at Pendennis commented, “Malahne is the most extensive superyacht restoration programme ever undertaken. We are extremely proud of the result and to be rewarded with a World Superyacht Award is a reflection of the dedication and passion of everyone involved in this project.”
