Penum launches new yacht chef mentor programme

Penum, an online yacht provisioning company based in Grasse, France, has recently launched a goodwill initiative entitled the “Penum Yacht Chef Mentor Programme” aimed at connecting aspiring and junior chefs in the superyacht industry with established head chefs.

The goal of this informal programme is to “buddy-up” reputable yacht head chefs with crew chefs, second chefs, junior chefs, sous chefs and any other young yacht chefs.

Penum believes volunteering is a fantastic way for Yachting head chefs to demonstrate their ability to lead and help others, beyond their immediate work environment.

By sharing their knowledge and assisting a new chef avoid the mistakes made early on in a chef’s journey; they would be educating the industry at a grass-roots level. Hopefully this will create a pattern of positive mentoring in the industry.

The benefits for the mentee, is to gain a dependable mentor, that’s made it in a tough and competitive industry. The mentee would be connected by email, and therefore have a valuable resource to help guide them, answer questions and if requested, give professional critique in their yachting progression.

Ellie Barker from Penum Provisions commented, “While supplying provisions to superyachts for the past three years, we noticed our head chef clientele had some qualities in common;  all talented and highly experienced chefs, and all at the top of their game. We wanted to tap into that experience, and create a way to share it with junior chefs. When we approached a handful of our head chef clients to gauge their interest in mentoring, their enthusiasm was immediate.”

Daniel Poole, head chef on board a superyacht jumped at the chance to mentor, "You can absolutely count me in. It would be a privilege to be able to give something back into the industry, I've gained so much from."

The programme has no cost, or contracts and the time a head chef can spare in mentoring is completely at their discretion.
