Pershing 62 sinks off Jersey coast

Two crewmembers had to be rescued by emergency services last week after the 19-metre Pershing 62 motor cruiser they were working aboard sank in St Aubin’s Bay, just off the Jersey coast.

The P6T2 yacht, owned by a Jersey resident, hit a large metal navigation marker buoy after ‘taking on water rapidly’ as she was travelling between Jersey and Guernsey.

Jersey Fire and Rescue Service arrived at the scene shortly after the crew’s 6:00pm call to discover a tip of the bow visible above the waterline. The two members of crew had managed to escape the vessel and were found safe on a life raft.

A statement from the Ports of Jersey said that the yacht sank quickly, allowing no opportunity for salvage.

A spokesman commented, “The boat is completely submerged to a depth of approximately 20 metres of water and is just off the Portlet on the Island’s south-west coast.”

The un-saveable P6T2 yacht is the latest modification of Pershing’s 62 model. On sale for €1.9m in Majorca in 2015, the yacht could reach an impressive top speed of 46.5 knots from her twin MTU 10V 2000 M93 engines.

Created by Fulvio De Simoni in collaboration with Ferretti’s team of naval architects, engineers and designers, she is described as having a ‘streamlined profile of a dynamic and sporty spirit’. Ferretti acquired Pershing in 1998 and continues to sell products under the brand.
