Piening Propeller: The third generation of propulsion experts

Yachting Pages recently spoke to Mathias Pein, managing director of Piening Propeller to find out more about their company’s background and upcoming developments.

Piening Propeller was founded in 1928 by Mr Otto Piening, who began his career opening a repair shop for motorbikes in Glückstadt, Germany.

His craftsmanship was so renowned, that he was soon approached to repair propellers from the local fleet of fishing boats. Besides repairing, Mr Otto Piening soon began tuning the propellers and from then, the company developed.

On the 9th April 1929, Otto Piening made an entry at the chamber of commerce for the company Otto Piening Schiffspropeller und Wellenanlagen GmbH, roughly translating to Otto Piening Specialist plant for propellers.

Today, Piening Propeller is one of the world’s leading marine propulsion companies and works with superyacht shipyards, Navy ships, coast guard ships and research vessels. The company’s clientele includes renowned shipyards Lurssen, Blohm & Voss, Abeking & Rasmussen and Nobiskrug.

Mathias, managing director commented, “We haven’t been affected by the recession. Business is still good thanks to a number of orders from the naval ship building industry over the last few years.”

Taking over in 2003, Mathias Pein represents the third generation in this family business, he stated, “Due to the fact, that we are a family owned company, we work closer with our customers on a long-term business. We practice a complete ‘made in Germany’ service’, from design to manufacture.”

When Yachting Pages asked, ‘Who would your dream client be?’ Mathais replied, “All clients who order from us again, because that shows they are happy with our support and the equipment we provide.”

Piening Propeller has developed considerably over the years and was awarded ISO 9001:2000 certification in 2009 - showing that the company fulfills the requirements for development, production and distribution of propellers and shaftings as well as repairs and services of transmission equipment and the distribution of ZF Products.

Continually progressing, Piening Propeller is currently working on the development of thrust bearings and Controllable Pitch Propellers (CPPs).

To find out more about Piening Propeller and their products, the team will be at Monaco Yacht Show (24th to 27th September 2014) and Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show (30th October to 3rd November 2014).
