PYA announces recognised qualifications for yacht chefs

The Professional Yachting Association (PYA) has announced that it has recently signed an agreement with Worldchefs to allow superyacht chefs to achieve new qualifications that will be recognised on land, based on the chef’s at-sea experience.

The recognition reward programme, which includes a programme of training and examinations, will make it possible for chefs and cooks working in the yachting sector to gain the Worldchefs/PYA Professional Culinary Certification Awards qualification.

Three levels of the PCCA certification will be available, including the Professional Chef or Chef de Partie (Yacht Chef Award Level One), Sous Chef (Yacht Chef Award Level Two) and Chef de Cuisine (Yacht Chef Award Level Three).

It is hoped that the new qualification will allow yacht chefs a greater chance to progress in the shoreside culinary industry.

Charles Caroll, president of Worldchefs said, “Worldchefs is delighted to join forces with PYA and to help to promote opportunities for chefs and cooks working in the yachting sector who seek international recognition for their professional skills, education and training.”

According to the PYA, each level of training will include the relevant Worldchefs criteria, plus yachting-related criteria. Assessments will be based on each applicant, and will include any sea service and previous culinary qualifications and experience.

Joey Meen, director of training and certification at PYA added, “The PYA is delighted to have this collaboration with Worldchefs, with the intention of awarding and recognizing the skills and expertise of the amazing chefs who work in our sector.

“Yachting experience has often been left out of the loop with professional recognition. Worldchefs is giving yacht chefs the change to credit these talents with an international endorsement.”
