Raymarine Launches Tablet and Smartphone Apps to 'Control' Superyachts

Smartphones and tablet devices are becoming more popular for use aboard superyachts. Like the 140ft-long Adastra superyacht, for instance. Designed by John Shuttleworth, the craft launched in China and can be controlled with an iPad from a distance of 164ft.

Now the latest manufacturer to join the trend is Raymarine, which has launched a new series of apps for controlling its ‘e’ and ‘c-Series’ multifunction displays wirelessly.

The two new apps, RayRemote and RayControl, are now available for Apple iOS, Android and Kindle Fire. With RayControl, a tablet becomes both a viewer and a full-function two-way control.

The tablet syncs with a multifunction display (MFD) aboard superyachts. The MFD is an electronic display, which performs more than one function, e.g. it can act as a chart plotter one moment and a radar display the next.

Users touch the tablet screen to control the MFD to view charts, operate the radar and thermal cameras, select menus and set waypoints – just as they would by operating the MFD directly.

The RayControl app’s features also include a ‘pop-out’ virtual keypad which mimics the MFD’s rotary controller and hard keys so that users can operate all available functions wirelessly and remotely.

RayRemote is designed for smartphones. Users can switch their smaller screens between a ‘full screen MFD repeater display’ and a ‘full screen virtual keypad’ simply by tapping the display.

The smartphone’s RayRemote virtual keypad mimics the keypad on the MFD, so that users can navigate features, rotate through menus and make adjustments easily.

RayRemote works with all Raymarine’s new e Series and c Series multifunction displays via wi-fi. Thanks to wi-fi technology, a single MFD can be controlled by multiple wireless devices such as a smartphone using RayRemote or tablets using RayControl.

RayControl and RayRemote are available for Apple iOS, Android and Kindle Fire, and can be purchased via the Apple iTunes App store, Google Play Store for Android, and through the Amazon Android Marketplace.
