News outlets and authorities in Saba have responded to an incident last week, where 48m M/Y Elsa ran aground at Ladder Bay.
While the cause of the yacht’s grounding is still being investigated, local news outlet Saba News reported that such incidents are “rare”, and “efforts have been made over the past years to improve the resilience of the mooring systems in the Saba Marine Park.”
Saba News also reported that additional patrols by Marine Park Rangers are to be scheduled in order to help arriving yachts, and ensure that vessels are “safely secured to the moorings”. “An independent review of current mooring systems is also to be conducted, in order to confirm the systems’ suitability for open-water conditions.”
The Public Entity Saba and Saba Conservation Foundation have since been working to salvage the yacht, whilst minimising damage to the surrounding environment and vessel.
According to Saba News, a new Harbour Master Plan is also being formulated. The website reported that the plan “includes research into methods of improving the harbour facilities and anchorages. The aim of the plan is to further professionalize Fort Bay Harbor and to increase Saba’s attractiveness to the yachting sector.
“Continued efforts will be made to have a VHF repeater installed, which will improve communication within the mooring zones for additional safety and quick response.”
