Stolen, sunken superyacht lifted from the marina bottom

M/Y Mimi, the Hatteras 80 superyacht that a thief tried to steal from the Miami Beach Marina earlier this month, has been lifted from the marina after sinking in the incident.

The 24m yacht reportedly pulled into the Miami marina late evening on Sunday 2nd October before the attempted hijacking, where a thief jumped on board as the captain stepped off the yacht.

Footage shows the man pulling away from the dock before losing control and crashing into the concrete marina wall, as well as several neighbouring boats and quays in his path. The yacht’s hull was ruptured and she soon began to sink inside the marina wall in the early hours of Monday morning. The thief then proceeded to jump overboard in the darkness, in a bid to escape.

It is believed that his reckless driving was down to the fact that he had lost power in one of the yacht’s engines, but he was never found, despite local searches of the nearby areas by the police and coastguard.

Grainy first-hand footage of the thief’s reckless driving can be seen on Ocean of News’ YouTube channel, captured by a by-stander on a mobile phone as the events unfolded – please be advised that the video does contain some bad language.

Ocean of News has also now posted footage of the yacht being lifted from the marina yesterday morning.
