51-metre (167-foot) Phinisi-style superyacht Dunia Baru has been delivering vital supplies such as food and clothing to the earthquake-hit island of Lombok in Indonesia following the disaster which left more than 500 people dead.
The vessel, manned by 18 crewmembers as well as the yacht’s owner Mark Robba, his family and his friends, spent two days distributing the aid to survivors from the Medana Bay Marina on the island.
Thousands of dollars’ worth of supplies, including 2000kg of rice, 3,000 litres of drinking water, 50 mattresses, 1,400 blankets and a generator, were distributed thanks to donations from the Dunia Baru’s charter clients and colleagues. Seven truckloads were sent to various villages from the yacht, with an additional car full of supplies sent to the badly affected east Lombok.
Over 1,000 instant noodle portions and 400 cans of fish were also delivered, with the Dunia Baru’s crew and owner preparing and serving over 500 hot meals to those affected by the earthquake.
Robba has described the conditions on the island, noting blocked roads and numerous toppled buildings.
“About 80% of the houses and structures appeared to be totally destroyed over most of north Lombok,” Robba said, “[But it’s] amazing how many people are still smiling despite their suffering.”
He continued, “Compared to their needs, our contribution is so small, but everyone has been so appreciative of the assistance we’ve given them. Lombok and the waters around it are special to Dunia Baru and we are glad we could help, even a little.”
