Superyacht marina takes shape for 2016

Among events at last week’s 2015 Miami Yacht & Brokerage Show was a gathering hosted by Show Management and the Florida Yacht Brokers Association on nearby Watson Island, where a superyacht marina development is taking shape.

Taking over two years to complete, the marina portion of Island Gardens Deep Harbour is expected in October 2015, with complementary hotels and condominiums to follow. The launch of this yachting resort will then be celebrated with an exciting grand ceremony, and will increase the footprint of the Show in Miami Beach for years to come.

The result will be ‘Super-Yacht Miami’, a new complement to the brokerage show. The deep-water facility will enable the exhibition of superyachts even larger than those that Show Management exhibits at its Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show.

Andrew Doole, senior vice president and COO of Show Management said, “We’ll be able to accommodate practically any size yacht, the largest in the world at the venue.”

Doole was part of a contingent that attended a gathering at the site to see the scope of the project, which was detailed with renderings and a scale model.

The development project on the 10.7-acre island (with 13.4 acres of submerged land) will feature the only marina in North America exclusively designed for superyachts with 5,000 linear feet of dockage accommodating yachts as large as 550 feet in 18-foot average depths and up to 25 feet for outer slips.

Two luxury residential towers containing 170 residences and 360-degree views of Biscayne Bay, the Atlantic Ocean and the Miami skyline will be the centrepiece of the development.

Doole added, “This is something we started working on with the developer (Flagstone Development) several years ago, and it’s finally coming to fruition. We’re looking forward to it becoming a part of the show for years to come.”
