The Gateway to the Whitsundays undergoes a facelift

The regeneration of Abell Point Marina began in August 2013 as part of new owner, Paul Darrouzet’s dream to transform the Airlie Beach marina into a world-class yachting destination.

Located at the Gateway to one of Australia’s most prestigious and world-renowned destinations, the Whitsundays lies in the heart of the Great Barrier Reef. Made up of 74 islands, the Whitsundays showcases the famous Whitehaven Beach – voted in 2014 as the third best beach in the world by travel site Touropia.

Abell Point Marina’s latest regeneration project includes the development of:

  • 300 additional car and bus parking bays
  • Six lane undercover arrival and departure plaza
  • New offices, guest amenities, kiosks, dining and social options, boardwalks and pavilions
  • Upgrade of arms with two new 60m superyacht berths serviced by roll on roll off truck provisioning and service and upgrade of shore power
  • Beautification of North Village including shade pavilions, upgrade of the restaurant and customer facilities
  • Doubling of fuel capacity and installation of 24-hour fuel access
  • Unleaded fuel

Significant progress has already been made at the North Village with the demolition of the marina office building, which has drastically changed the appearance of the North Village. Alongside this refurbishment, development will also include a new south marina office and completion of the exit/entry plaza in South Village.

Paul Darouzett, owner of Abell Point Marina said, “There will be extensive dredging works inside the marina wall to depths never experienced in the history of the marina, enhancing berthing capabilities and the marina’s capacity to accommodate a larger range of vessels up to 60m.”

And it’s not only marina facilities that are getting a facelift, with the impending launch of their new marina branding and website this year. Paul Darouzett commented, “Reverting to the marina’s original name, it is the beginning of the marina’s re-birth towards a sustainable future for generations to follow.”
