VPLP Design reveals wingsail concept Evidence

French studio VPLP Design has released details of a 47.7-metre wingsail catamaran called Evidence.

Using similar carbon-composite wingsail technology as many America’s Cup participants, Evidence requires a relatively small sailplan for her length at just 400 square metres. She has been fitted with VPLP’s tried and tested Oceanwings wingsail, which the studio claims produces twice the conventional sail’s power while still being reefable, furlable and automated.

In a recent statement, Marc Van Peteghem of VPLP explained, “When integrated into a hybrid propulsion system, it [the wingsail] can reduce the fuel consumption of the main engines and, consequently, the harmful greenhouse gases they emit.

“Evidence offers the stability, space and performance of a catamaran with the bonus of a simple, yet pioneering rig – so you and your crew can enjoy the peace and pleasure of sailing under wind power.”

On board Evidence offers accommodation for up to 12 guests across six staterooms. Main-deck accommodation includes a main-deck owner’s cabin of 46.5 square metres, a double and twin cabin. Two further twins and a double cabin are located on the lower deck in the port-side hull, while crew quarters for 10 are housed entirely in the starboard hull.

With a 16.6-metre beam, the main deck also houses a large lounge and dining area that becomes an indoor-outdoor area, thanks to louver-like glass walls.

A vast sundeck accommodates sunpads and a glass-bottomed spa pool that provides a skylight for the aft cockpit. She has extensive storage space for two tenders, Seabobs and a full set of scuba gear. A private owner’s cockpit is set near the bow.

Auxiliary power is provided by a pair of 490hp Caterpillar C12 diesel engines that provide her with a top speed of 16 knots and a comfortable cruising speed of 14 knots.
