Yachting Pages is proud to present a series of interviews with inspirational women working at the heart of the superyacht industry. We have teamed up with the Association of Women in Yachting to showcase the outstanding work being carried out by the women seeking to make waves in the marine sector – for themselves and, more importantly, for the next generation.
A 2021 survey by She of the Sea on diversity in the industry highlighted the disparity between female crew compared to their male counterparts – of 32,000 crew members (including those currently employed and those seeking work) surveyed, only 28% were women. Further examination of the sample pool by job role revealed some worrying data for those championing diversity, including the fact that just 2.1% of captains were female.
Jenny Matthews, chief officer and co-founder of She of the Sea, noted, “We will have to wait until next year’s collection to compare results to find out what is happening here. If senior representation increases, this signals we have a new generation climbing the ranks. If they don’t, then we have a serious talent pipeline blockage on our hands.”
This can’t happen. We want to see the number increase significantly year-on-year. That’s why our collaborative interviews will shine a spotlight on the fearless females who are breaking down barriers and pioneering change within the superyacht industry. Their stories will inspire more women to pursue a career on board, and their professional endeavours will ensure new job opportunities become available for those who do.
