Yachties United launches to support crew affected by war in Ukraine

A new yachting community, Yachties United, has been assembled with the objective of building a ‘stronger and sustainable’ industry to support those affected by the ongoing war in Ukraine.

The idea was prompted by a desire to support Ukrainian yacht crew and their families, providing them with an opportunity to connect with like-minded yachting professionals who can offer help. According to founder Margarita Amam, there are more than 600 Ukrainian yacht crew with families in Ukraine.

Its official website Yachtiesunited.com, created by Amam, provides a platform for users to arrange donations (pick ups, drop offs) and offer or search for hosts within the yachting community. Users can also provide or request social services such as counselling or transport.

A public Facebook group has also been set up by Petra Untea which allows users to interact in real time and post information. Untea, one of the group’s administrators, pinned a post in the group to explain that it is designed to be a resource for Ukrainian crew members and not a place to discuss political views on the war. Posts should help provide ‘information, funds and donations’ for Ukrainian crew members that have been affected by the conflict.

So far, dozens of users have offered accommodation, made a donation or volunteered their time via the website and Facebook group.

Speaking to Yachting Pages, Amam, who is also the managing director of IMS GmbH, said, “Don’t be scared into inaction. Don’t wait for how ‘the industry will react’. You are the industry. We are the industry. Let us define it through our actions.”

The long-term ambition for Yachties United is for the community to grow and become a place for crew, suppliers, designers, builders and brokers to share perspectives, open minds and bridge gaps in terms of gender and culture.

For more information and to get involved, visit the Yachties United website or Facebook group. See the flyer below with information on how to donate.
