Yachting Gives Back supports Palma shelter ahead of refit season

Monday 2nd March represented a period of long-desired change for people living in difficult conditions in Palma. It was the day ‘Centro Habitacional Inge’ opened its doors to 45 individuals who will call the new shelter their temporary home.

The housing project was initiated by Associació Tardor and is lovingly named ‘Llar Inge’, (Llar being Catalan for ‘Home’ and Inge being the philanthropist whose foundation helped fund the project). It will offer a safe, dignified, clean and friendly place to live for an extremely low rent – between £64 and £172 per month depending on the room, with no extra charges for utilities.

The residents will have a comfortable, furnished bedroom as well as brand new bathroom facilities and communal spaces for relaxing, watching television, socialising and taking part in organised workshops. They will also be entitled to three warm meals a day at Tardor’s social dining room.

The project was funded entirely by charitable foundations and private donors, and is the concept of three people who work at Tardor; Toni Bauzá, Ascension Sala Barquiel and Jonny Darder Barrachina. Ascension was in charge of the project and has dedicated every possible moment outside of her own full-time job to the conversion of the large derelict shop to the new shelter.

When Yachting Gives Back were first notified about the project, they quickly realised that it coincided with the yachts returning to Palma for the refit season, they used this opportunity to ask crew to collaborate by donating items they no longer needed for their yachts.

Yachting Gives Back have taken the role of furnishing Llar Inge with vast amounts of bedding, towels, soft furnishings, mattresses, sofas and even two televisions! Through private donations, Yachting Gives Back were also able to help pay for electrical and plumbing installations.

Yachting Gives Back intend to continue supporting Tardor with this wonderful project, with talk of a second centre already underway.
