Yachting Pages to host webinar discussing new French anchoring regulations for superyachts in 2023

Yachting Pages is hosting a webinar with French government organisations the Maritime Prefecture of the Mediterranean and the French Office for Biodiversity along with anchoring mobile app DONIA announcing new French laws on anchoring around Posidonia seagrass on the French Riviera.

The webinar will take place on 7th December 2022 at 09:00am GMT (10:00am CET) via Zoom.

The webinar will announce various new regulations on where superyachts can anchor in the South of France, including Corsica. It will also discuss the implementation of mooring buoys across the French Riviera and how captains can book them. Finally, captains can also find out about the Mediterranean Posidonia Network and other French regulations in place for superyachts concerning noise and the use of underwater lights.

Posidonia webinar information

Speakers in the webinar will include Frédéric Villers of the French Office for Biodiversity, Amélie Chardin of the Maritime Prefecture of the Mediterranean, Pierre Descamps of DONIA, Yachting Pages’ founder and CEO Steve Crowe, and more.

“We’re proud to be working with the French government to be the industry’s leading resource for information on the French anchoring regulations concerning Posidonia. The aim of the webinar is to inform and educate superyacht captains of new legislation and it’s also an opportunity for captains to ask questions and raise any concerns,” Crowe said.

Posidonia seagrass is an underwater plant found growing in the Mediterranean Sea. As valuable as coral reefs, it is paramount to the underwater ecosystems, providing important sources of oxygen and housing over 50 species of fish. When a deadweight mooring or anchor is dropped, seagrass meadows are heavily damaged. Growing just a few centimetres per year, hundreds of hectares are ravaged by anchoring each year and, once destroyed, Posidonia cannot be restored.

There are serious penalties for captains that do not adhere to the anchoring regulations around Posidonia. If the laws are broken, captains can face imprisonment, fines of up to €150,000 and bans from navigating in French Mediterranean waters.
