Marine engine manufacturer Yanmar has been announced as the official marine supplier for the 36th America’s Cup, which is due to take place in Auckland, New Zealand, in 2021.
The news was confirmed at the America’s Cup Overture in the U.K. at the birthplace of the race: Cowes, Isle Of Wight. The overture is the first event on the road to the America’s Cup Presented by Prada.
Racing to qualify for the main event will commence in autumn 2019 when the first America’s Cup World Series events take place in the Mediterranean. Over the next 12 months the best teams, from the most prestigious yacht clubs, will be designing and building their AC75 yachts in preparation for the America’s Cup World Series that will continue in 2020 with more racing in North America and Asia.
The focus will then be on Auckland with the Christmas Race and the all-important Challenger Selection Series, the Prada Cup, in January and February 2021. The Prada Cup will determine which Challenger will line up against the Defender, Emirates Team New Zealand, for the 36th America’s Cup Match in March 2021.
Yanmar’s marine diesel engines will be utilised throughout all events on the America’s Cup Race Management boats, which are an essential component in the successful delivery of the event.
Laurent Esquier, CEO of the Challenger of Record – 36th America’s Cup, said, “We are delighted to welcome Yanmar to the 36th America’s Cup Presented by Prada. As the official marine supplier, Yanmar will be on the race course throughout all the events of the America’s Cup and I am confident that we can trust in Yanmar to assist us in delivering an exceptional on-water operations programme around the world.”
In its new partnership, Yanmar has outlined how it aims to showcase its comprehensive range of marine industry products.
Takehito Yamaoka, president of Yanmar, commented, “We are proud to have been selected as official marine supplier to the America’s Cup Presented by Prada. The America’s Cup is an event like no other, at the highest level of yachting.
“That we have been selected to take our place alongside the world’s best marine engineering, design, hydrodynamics and boatbuilding expertise is a testament to the engineering skill and knowledge that we’ve accumulated over the last century and more of operation. We will fulfil our responsibility as official marine supplier for the success of the America’s Cup.”
